Shooting near State Street Macy's sends 19-year-old to hospital

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago police are investigating after a shooting outside the State Street Macy's sent a young woman to the hospital on Saturday night.

Police said a 19-year-old woman was shot while walking on the sidewalk outside the store with her friends just before 9 p.m.

According to unconfirmed police dispatch reports, the victim ran inside Macy's after being shot. She was transported to Northwestern Memorial hospital and is expected to be OK. Footage captured by CBS News Chicago showed the woman being treated by paramedics inside the Macy’s.

The shooting happened on the opening weekend for the Christkindlmarket in Daley Plaza. That's where Francisco Malafaia told CBS News Chicago he and his family were when they heard gunfire.

“We all ducked behind the … concrete blocks, and we just saw a bunch of people running,” he said. “Also, we saw the police officers all running toward.”

Large crowds were also gathered for the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival and Parade on Michigan Avenue, which had just wrapped up. The lighting of the city's official Christmas tree in Millennium Park took place the night before.

Police said no one is in custody as they continue their investigation.
