CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Villa Park resident Laurie Knecht is a single mom and caregiver to her special needs son, Cory.
She had been struggling to pay her utility bills and put food on the table.

“It's so scary when you're in a situation thinking, ‘How do I get back on my feet again? And where do I start?’” Knecht told WBBM Newsradio.
Thankfully, she found the Salvation Army Oakbrook Terrace Corps.
“It's almost like a one-stop shop for everything, you know? It’s allowed us to keep us in our house. We also, from the food pantry, have gotten dog food and stuff like that too,” Knecht said.
Not only did Knecht receive financial help, she said the greatest gift has been the community center welcoming her now 19-year-old son.
“They had a lot of activities like Easter egg hunts, and they had Boy Scouts and we just always felt like, with the disability, we were always welcomed and accepted there,” she said.
Her message to others this holiday season?
“I tell everybody, you know, give what you can but if you can't, there are places out there that will help,” Knecht offered.
