(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Voters in Skokie have overwhelmingly approved term limits for mayor and other elected officials.

Over 80% of Skokie voters said yes to set a limit of three terms for mayor, clerk and trustees.

The change to the village code will come for most of those in the spring municipal elections, but trustees who elected from districts — as part of a staggered cycle — will see it 2027.

Mayor George Van Dusen has been in office for 25 years and voiced support for the measure.

The clock starts ticking now, so prior terms served will not be considered.

When the proposal was introduced in April 2024, Van Dusen said he did not feel targeted by the measure.

Skokie joins other suburbs, including Naperville, Downers Grove and Wilmette in setting term limits.
