CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Since April 2020, people who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits have been getting extra money near the end of each month to help them get through the pandemic.

Residents of Chicago, though, were reminded that February’s extra SNAP payment would be the last one.

Starting in March, the emergency SNAP allotments will end nationwide.

The food stamp benefit ranged from $55–$255 per person, per month. On average, officials said one-person households would see benefits drop by about $84 per month.

The City of Chicago told residents who get SNAP benefits that once the extra payments end, those who still need help putting food on the table can get aid from one of the hundreds of free food programs in Chicago.

Chicagoans can call 211 to find a free distribution or meal program near them.
