(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) has doubts about the investigation that cleared the way for Father Michael Pfleger to return to ministry at St. Sabina Church.
The organization’s leaders say they are concerned about a chilling effect on future reports of abuse, WBBM Newsradio’s Steve Miller reports.
“When you see something like this happen, it’s discouraging,” Larry Antonsen, Chicago leader of SNAP, said.
He questions the Chicago Archdiocese’s Independent Review Board, which found “insufficient reason” to suspect Pfleger of child sexual abuse. Two men alleged Pfleger abused them back in the 1970s.
“It discourages people from coming out and telling their stories. Yeah, for sure, it’s going to have an effect,” Antonsen said.
He said “very seldom do people make up stories” of abuse.
As Father Pfleger returned to St. Sabina this week, he told his supporters and the news media that people who say they have been abused should be supported. He maintained his innocence as he was investigated and lived away from the Gresham-based parish.
“I also think that in this world that there are false accusations and lies,” he said.
