CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — As Chicago makes an attempt to re-open after about 15 months of pandemic-related closures, it has now been a year since civil unrest added to the difficulties businesses have faced.
With residents and tourists alike out enjoying this memorial day weekend, it's a different tone than a year ago when the news of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis spread cross country and around the world.
"To say that the best way to handle the situation, your anger, was to riot or loot the stores, I can't say that. But I can't say that I understand the pain. I understand the frustration," Siri Hibbler of the Garfield Park Chamber of Commerce told CBS 2.
Hibbler said last year the neighborhood sidewalks were filled with broken glass.
"But what I love about this community is that folks came out and they helped clean the community. That shows us that these business owners love this community and the community loves them back. So that gives us hope," Hibbler said.
