CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- As the city heads into another election, election officials say there are still more polling places that are not completely accessible to people with disabilities.
The Chicago Board of Elections has put out new accessibility ratings for each of its polling places. They range from high or fully ADA compliant, medium, low or no, low or no with steps unknown or no steps but otherwise unknown.
"As the important work of upgrading our public places continues, this new system will better communicate to voters the current state of accessibility of each polling place on Election Day,” said Max Bever, Director of Public Information for the Chicago Board of Elections.
It breaks down this way. There are 302 polling places that are fully accessible to people with disabilities, and 143 were rated medium, which means no steps were involved but other obstacles exist -- like a doorway that might not be wide enough for a full-size wheelchair.
There are more than 375 polling places rated low or no compliance or no or low with steps. Election officials said they will continue to work to make all polling places fully accessible.
