(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — On the South Side, members of a faith community raised an upside down American flag in protest of Trump Administration policies.

The American Flag was raised upside down Monday by members of a South Side church community.

Outside St. Sabina Church, hymns and songs from the civil rights era were sung by dozens, for them, the flag is raised upside down as a sign of a nation in distress.

“What we are seeing in America is not and cannot be accepted or normalized,” St. Sabina’s Father Michael Pfleger said.

Father Pfleger led a call by his faith community against the Trump Administration’s mass deportations, the demonizing of immigrants, the rolling back of DEI policies, and the firing of federal employees. All of this, while a billionaire is given access to the sensitive information of Americans.

A small group of military veterans in counter protest hold American Flags within the crowd.

U.S. Navy Combat Veteran Esteban Burgoa said that he agrees with most of what Father Pfleger is saying, but not with the disrespect to the flag of the United States.

“He's disrespecting the soldiers. He's disrespecting the country. This is the symbol of the American people, not Donald Trump.”
