CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Coming off a split with the World Series Champion Houston Astros, White Sox fans were optimistic just ahead of the season’s home opener at Guaranteed Rate Field.
The sizzle of the grill smelled just as good as it sounded: burgers, brats, shrimp kabobs, and veggies. It’s the 20th year that Mokena’s Stoney Point Grill has held it’s Sox home opener tailgate party.

“You want me to make predictions for the season? I say it every year. They’re going to get to the World Series. You never know. They got a good team this year, if they can stay healthy, you never know,” said Jim Burke, Stoney Point Grill’s co-owner.
Longtime Sox fan but first time home opener attendee, a young woman named Kayla Shumack shared with WBBM her analysis of the team and the season ahead.
“I think they’re going to do well this year considering how the past four games with the Astros went. They both won two games, and that to me is a good sign,” Shumack said.
Asked of the new players who have caught her eye, Shumack said rookie outfielder Oscar Colás.
“He’s been doing pretty well for a rookie. Vaughn is still pretty new, and I think he’s improved a lot, and I think we’re going to see good things from him,” Shumack added.
Even with the loss of Abreu, Shumack said that picking up new manager Pedro Grifol seems to be a plus, giving her optimism toward Sox games to be played in October.
“I have high hopes that they’ll make it to the World Series this year. It’s kind of a far fetch, but I have high hopes for them, that with a new manager and how well the team has been working together, I think it’s a very good possibility,” Shumack concluded.
