The rate of return for sports collectibles can exceed the stock market and then some.
New York-based sports memorabilia expert Stephen Fishler told the noon business hour that soccer and basketball have a worldwide following, which means more people want to bid on rare pieces of sports memorabilia.
"I think there is the need to have a piece of these legendary sports figures," he said.
For example, sneakers worn by Michael Jordan in the flu game of the 1997 NBA finals-The ball boy who would up with the shoes sold them at auction for $105,000 in 2013. They were sold again last month for $1.3 million.
