CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The frigid temperatures were no match for a free meal Wednesday afternoon in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

Outside St. Sabina Church, there were cars as far as the eye could see.

“What’s so sad and crazy is that we had people standing out here in line for two hours, about 100 people. That’s how desperate people are to get free, good food,” said donor Tom Sondag.

That good food came in the form of corned beef, rye bread and mustard, a thousand packages from Manny’s Deli.

“That’s what I’m here for, to give back. I live here in Chicago. These are my neighbors. [I] just want to pay it back and pay it forward,” Sondag added.

Father Michael Pfleger directed traffic, heard plenty of praise from grateful residents and reflected on the large turnout.

“We can feed people. We can have people off the street. The will just isn’t there. Poor people are still throwaways in this country. That’s unacceptable,” Pfleger told WBBM.
