CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Public Schools said it met Monday’s deadline for training staff on physical restraints after the state found repeated violations.
CPS announced at least two staffers at all 517 schools run by the district have been properly trained in physical restraint, time out and de-escalation procedures ahead of the first day.
The Illinois State Board of Education set the deadline after finding CPS overwhelmingly failed to train staff and used restraints in violation of state law despite the board issuing multiple directives last school year to stop.
CEO Pedro Martinez said in a statement the district "aims to create a safe learning environment and the use of physical restraint in our schools should always be a last resort."
