NEW LENOX TOWNSHIP (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A six-hour standoff with an armed man ended peacefully in the far southwestern suburbs overnight.
Will County Sheriff’s Police said deputies responded around 6 p.m. Monday to a building in New Lenox Township, on 216th and Schoolhouse Road, about a man who was possibly suicidal. Two people who knew the man had said he had made comments earlier about killing himself and that he had weapons.
New Lenox firefighters broke open the door to the building and sheriff’s deputies went inside. The man had a gun and told the deputies to get out, which they did. Police said SWAT negotiators dealt with the man who eventually surrendered without hurting himself. He was taken to a hospital and guns were collected at the scene.
During the incident, Schoolhouse Road was closed and area businesses were on lockdown.
