CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO)-- The Illinois Department of Transportation and the State Police have a few tips as the winter storm approaches.

The winter storm warning for the Chicago area starts at noon on Saturday and continues until 6:00 a.m. Sunday with a predication of eight inches of snowfall.

"Our minute men are always out there. Not only will our snow trucks be out there removing the snow, but our minute men will be out there as well to help any stranded motorists or anyone else in need," Maria Castaneda, a representative with IDOT told WBBM.

"Not only should you be prepared, but make sure that your car is prepared for the winter as well."

The state agencies said it’s best to Know Before You Go. Their list of suggestions includes:

-Not driving if conditions are bad, unless you have to.

-Having a first aid kit, phone charger, blankets, extra clothes, jumper cables, kitty litter or sand, a flashlight and snow scraper in in your car.

-If you slide off the road, they say, stay in your car and 911.

-If you approach an emergency vehicle with its lights activated or a disabled vehicle with flashing lights, slow down and move over.

-Have cell phone, but do not use it while on the road.

-Have a full tank of gas.

-Make your windshield wiper is on and working.

-Have a few blankets in your car.

“Winter weather creates an even more dangerous working environment for first responders," said State Police Director Brendan Kelly. “Help protect the people who are protecting you.”
