(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A state lawmaker from Central Illinois has died in office.

Champaign-area Sen. Scott M. Bennett died Friday at Carle Foundation Hospital. He was 45.

The lawmaker's wife, Stacy, released a statement saying her spouse died of complications from a brain tumor.

“We remain in complete shock because it was all so sudden and unexpected," she said.

Scott Bennett, a lawyer, was appointed in 2015 to complete the term of Michael Frerichs, who was elected state treasurer.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker was among the elected leaders expressing condolences.

“Throughout his time in Springfield, he fiercely advocated for the institutions that shaped his life, from his upbringing on a Gibson City farm, all the way to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign,” Pritzker said of Bennett. “The entire state is a better place thanks to his service.”

Bennett is survived by his wife and two children.
