ISP squad car rear ended while investigating I-55 crash in Joliet; Trooper seriously injured

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A state trooper was seriously injured Monday after his vehicle was rear-ended while investigating a crash on Interstate 55 in Joliet.

Illinois State Police officials were called late Monday morning to investigate a two-vehicle traffic crash on I-55 northbound near Illinois Route 30 in Will County. Upon arrival around 11:45 a.m., a trooper pulled behind the wrecked vehicles in the left lane and had the emergency lights activated in order to assist with directing traffic to the right.

While the trooper was in his squad car, a 2010 black Cadillac crashed into the rear of the trooper’s squad car causing injury to the trooper, ISP said.

The trooper was airlifted to a local area hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Cadillac, 20-year-old Angel M. Casillas from Joliet, was also transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

The vehicles from the initial crash were not involved.

Traffic was diverted from the expressway at US Route 30 for more than four hours, according to state police. Lanes were reopened about 4 p.m.

State police said it is the sixth crash so far this year caused by drivers violating Scott’s Law by failing to yield to emergency vehicles.

A snowstorm moved into the Chicago area early Monday and was expected to drop a foot or more of snow by Tuesday.
