(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Bears great Steve “Mongo” McMichael was hospitalized on Wednesday for the second time since February, his family announced.

In a statement, the family said McMichael was suffering from a urinary tract infection.

The McMichael family said he was prescribed an antibiotic and would be returning home Wednesday night.

Family members expressed thanks to all of those who prayed or shared concern over McMichael's health.

The 66-year-old revealed in 2021 that had been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, also known as ALS. He can no longer speak or walk.

Later this year, McMichael will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. At an event in February celebrating his Hall of Fame honors, a friend of McMichael’s told WBBM’s Lisa Fielding that his wishes are to live long enough to be inducted and to attend the ceremony.

“We almost lost him a few months ago,” she said of McMichael. “He had sepsis and pneumonia, on top of ALS. He waited for [his induction], and hopefully he’s going to be here in August. We’re going to Canton.”
