(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 30-year-old west suburban man has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for stealing hundreds of credits cards, and prosecutors say he and his accomplices used those cards to buy more than $460,000 in merchandise.
Federal authorities dubbed the investigation "Operation Cash on Delivery." They say the investigation centered on a mail-theft ring and its mastermind, Davey Hines of Naperville.
From June 2018 through December of 2019, federal prosecutors say Hines and his 10 co-conspirators stole more than 650 credit cards through the mail. Some of his alleged co-conspirators worked for the post office.
Hines and his associates used the stolen cards to make more than $462,000 in fraudulent purchases, prosecutors say.
Hines allegedly ran the mail theft ring after he'd been convicted of bank fraud. He was free on court-supervised release.
