WINTHROP HARBOR (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A kayaker was rescued from Lake Michigan near the Wisconsin border over the weekend.
“We got a report of a kayaker in need of a rescue,” Winthrop Harbor Fire Chief Rocco Campanella said.
Campanella told WBBM it happened about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, near the North Point Marina.
“We didn’t realize how far the man was out…When we got there, he was about three-and-a-half miles out from shore,” Campanella said.
Emergency crews sprung into action.
“We have a preset plan for a water incident out here, and the plan came together. We were able to get out to a man who was clinging on to his kayak for several hours as it turns out. We brought him back out into safety,” the chief said.
The kayaker's own preparation also helped save his life.
“If he did not have a cellphone, the outcome could have been much worse,” Campanella said.
