CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A South Side hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will receive a financial boost from the government.
Cook County Health’s Stroger Hospital will be granted $863,000 in federal funding, enabling them to purchase new incubators, infant warmers, and other critical care tools for their NICU. They will replace nearly 20-year-old equipment.
U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth along with Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Cook County Health CEO Israel Rocha visited Stroger Hospital Monday to formally make the announcement.
“I’m so proud I was able to secure this critical support for Cook County Health to help upgrade Stroger Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.,” Duckworth said. “Every family deserves high quality care for their newborns, and making sure babies have what they need to be healthy and grow shouldn’t be dependent on your income level, the neighborhood you live in or the color of your skin.”
Duckworth’s office noted that almost 25% of babies born at Stroger Hospital are treated in the NICU due to premature birth or other complications.
