CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — About 50 students staged a walkout at Huntley High School on Tuesday morning, claiming the school hasn’t adequately responded to claims of sexual assault.
One senior who organized the event told the Northwest Herald she and her friends were harassed by a peer during lunch, and that the school should do more to make students feel safe.
Last spring, Principal Marcus Belin created a video to bring attention to the issue at the school.
“As you are out there seeing what’s going on with social media but also here in the building, if you see something that is just completely against what we believe, you have to say something,” Berlin said in the video.
Belin went on to say the school wants students to be aware of what sexual assault is and will provide resources to students who need them.
Students also criticized District 158 for not doing enough to punish those responsible for sexual harassment.
District spokeswoman Alex LeMoine issued a statement in response to the protest, saying “We also recognize that there is always room for improvement, and we are committed to continuing to find ways in which we can improve these systems of support, foster positive relationships in our buildings and value our students’ voices.”
