(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Students who were high school freshman at the start of the coronavirus pandemic are expected graduate later this year. Mental health professionals say these young people are still processing what happened.

Officials with the Chicago education non-profit Communities In Schools (CIS) says schools have primarily asked for help to reduce bullying and conflicts among students.

Shipra Panicker, senior director of intensive student supports, says some students who were stuck at home during COVID never learned to get along well with others.

Robin Koelsch, the organization’s senior director of partnerships, said there is some upside: “The pandemic has forced us to remove some of the stigma in talking about mental health.”

Both experts say young people are resilient and they will be okay.

Mental health in the schools is the topic of “At Issue,” which airs this weekend at 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
