(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The western suburb of Berwyn is taking new measures to rat out a rodent problem.

A recent survey showed less than 46% of food establishments had a rodent mitigation plan with a pest control provider. Now, all food establishments in Berwyn will be responsible for completing items detailed in a Rodent Prevention Accountability Packet.

Essentially, they’ll have to tell Berwyn officials what they're doing to keep the rats at bay.

“Ideally, the rodent situation will come down,”  said David Avila, township supervisor and health board president of Berwyn.

Local health inspectors will review records filed by food establishments quarterly. Ongoing and unresolved issues could result in possible fines.
