(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is dealing with a staffing shortage in its jail and is moving dozens of detainees about 35 miles away to the McHenry County Jail.
McHenry County is expected to take up to 150 detainees. The transfer is necessary to alleviate safety concerns amid a staffing crisis at the Lake County detention facility, Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli tells WBBM Newsradio.
Some Lake County correctional officers have been working multiple double shifts. The agreement with McHenry County allows them to “hit a relief valve.”
McHenry County is getting $100 a day per detainee. Lake County expects the cost savings -- from a reduction in staff overtime and expenses related to the detainees -- will keep costs about where they are now.
