(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The mayor of Maywood has been arrested for allegedly driving while drunk over the weekend.

Mayor Nathaniel George Booker was arrested around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

Chicago Police were called to I-90 near South Halsted Street for a well-being check.

The 37-year-old’s vehicle was in the middle lane of the outbound Kennedy expressway, obstructing other traffic.

Chicago police believed Booker was under the influence of alcohol.

The Maywood mayor was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence and obstructing drivers on a highway. Both offenses are misdemeanor charges.

Booker was elected mayor of Maywood last year after serving as a village trustee for two years.

He posted a message to his Facebook account quoting the Bible and a pastor that read, in part: “The Lord will turn your mistakes into a Miracle. He wont erase it, he will work through it. One piece of your life does not define your life.”

Booker was released from custody without posting a bond.
