(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Illinois State Police are investigating a Yorkville police officer’s fatal shooting of a man earlier this week.

Police said the officer and paramedics were responding to a medical call at a home on the 200 block of Leisure Street Monday evening.

Sixty-eight-year-old Marc Barnhart became uncooperative and produced a handgun, Yorkville police said in a news release.

The officer, “fearing for his own safety, and the safety of other occupants inside the home,” fired his gun, striking Barnhart,” the news release said.

Paramedics rendered aid but Barnhart died. A weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.

The officer, on the job for two years, has been placed on administrative duty.
