(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against several demolition and construction companies, following the deaths of three Chicago men during a fishing trip last spring at Starved Rock State Park.

The men were fishing near a bridge that had been demolished several weeks earlier. The attorney for their families,  Patrick Salvi, said they found what would appear to most people to be a piece of pipe and used it to prop up a pan they were cooking fish in.

“We know that because someone sent a text picture of it to one of the family members,” Salvi explained Thursday. “Shortly thereafter there was a catastrophic explosion.”

An investigation by the FBI and state police determined that the device was one of two left behind from the bridge demolition project and not reported.

The three men who died — Immer Rivera Tejada, 39; Rafael Rivera Tejada, 36; and their nephew, Guillermo Rivera Tejada, 26, lived in the Little Village neighborhood.

Salvi said the men who died had seven minor children.
