Supply-chain issues collide with Illinois license plate stickers

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) —The Illinois Secretary of State's Office has been forced to issue generic license plate renewal stickers that do not include key information.

Spokesman Dave Druker said it’s another example of supply-chain issues causing problems for end purchasers of the stickers, which usually have the expiration month and the license plate number.

“Our supplier was unable to obtain the same paper that we’ve used in the past for the registration sticker, which is on the back license plate. We have a substitute that has the year on it,” he said.

That information helps police quickly determine whether a license plate is valid.

Druker says police have been notified of the issue, so it should not be a problem.

But he advised drivers to keep the registration certificates that come with their license plate stickers in their vehicles — just in case.

The Illinois Secretary of State's Office hopes to resume issuing standard license plate stickers sometime later this year.
