(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The United States Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal of former Chicago Alderman Patrick Daley Thompson's conviction in a 2022 bank fraud case.

Thompson, grandson of the late Mayor Richard J. Daley was convicted of lying to federal regulators about loans from the failed Washington Federal Banks for Savings.

The court will hear arguments from Thompson’s attorneys that his conviction should be overturned because, while his statements to the feds were misleading, they were not lies.

David Greising, president of the Better Government Association, says that’s a pretty narrow point.

“When you’re relying on semantics, you’re in a bad position,” Greising argues. “Patrick Daley Thompson has already been found guilty. He already has served his short stint in prison. This is really about trying to clear his record.

Greising says, even if the high court agrees on that point, it might not be enough to throw out the entire case.
