CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- President Joe Biden will host a panel discussion on violent crime Monday at the White House, and one of those scheduled to appear on a panel is Chicago's police superintendent.
Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown is expected to be joined by police officials from Memphis and Newark, as well as city officials from New York, Washington, D.C., and San Jose, California.
Crime has been up in Chicago, but also nationwide, as both city officials and police struggle to combat gun violence. There is a continued push for police reform; so now, Biden is trying to work on both simultaneously.
On Monday, Biden is expected to discuss the work federal law enforcement is doing to stop the flow of illegal guns, including new strike forces in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington to help take down illegal gun traffickers and a new "zero tolerance" policy for dealers who sell guns illegally, the Associated Press reported.
He is encouraging cities to invest some of their COVID-19 federal relief funds into policing, and pushing alternative crime reduction steps, such as increased community support and summer jobs for teens.
Meanwhile, over the weekend in Chicago, at least 46 people were shot between Friday evening and midnight Monday morning. Of those, 11 people were killed. They happened as people were in homes, walking down the street or alley, driving in cars, or just standing on a porch. In one case, police said, two men were killed when someone shot them from a car as they were in a gas station on 61st and Ashland.
