OAK BROOK (WBBM NEWRADIO) - A police chase and crash Wednesday afternoon has landed a shoplifting suspect behind bars in the western suburbs.

Oak Brook Police were alerted by license plate reader technology to a vehicle wanted in connection with burglary and retail theft at about 2:30 p.m.

The vehicle was detected entering Oakbrook Center Mall, and police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver sped away and collided with another motorist at 22nd Street and Route 83.

The driver refused to get out so police shot out the rear window with a bean bag and took the driver into custody. They were taken to the hospital with complaints of pain.

No one else was hurt. An investigation has been launched.
