ELGIN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Multiple communities are dealing with damage from Wednesday's powerful storms, which included tornadoes.
One of the hardest hit areas in Elgin.
Police said 19 homes were damaged Wednesday night.
Danette Voss is sure it was a tornado that came through her Edgewater by Del Webb subdivision. The former adjunct professor of meteorology at Elmhurst University explained how the wind chime on her house and her potted plant were fine, but the wind tried to bend her garage door in half and ripped off siding from homes down the block.
“It can be multiple vortices, and you just have a lot of sheer, a lot of turn going on in that tornado…Our neighbor here has damage in the back…our other neighbor, two doors down, lost a tree and their air conditioner…if you go further down the street, you’ll see more damage,” Voss said.
Voss was not home when the suspected tornado came through. Instead, she was in nearby St. Charles, where, like many of us, were told to shelter in place while the high winds were coming through.
This morning, there has already been quite a bit of cleanup. Police also have set up barricades, making sure that people are safe and not going through areas that might have damage.
