(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Authorities planned to detonate a suspected World War II-era rocket that was discovered Thursday morning in a yard in unincorporated Antioch.

Lake County sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence in the 25000 block of West 3rd Street for a report of a suspicious item after a homeowner had been doing yardwork and found something with sharp edges and dug the item out of the ground, officials said.

The corroded item resembled the type of anti-tank rocket that was used in World War II, authorities said.

Officials said they weren’t sure how long the object had been buried, nor whether it could explode. The Waukegan Bomb Squad responded, and some residents were evacuated from the area.

Homeowners were told they could go back to their residences by mid-afternoon, as bomb experts dealt with the object at a remote location.
