(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Now hear this: Organizers of Chicago's Friday Morning Swim Club say the group’s plunges near Montrose Harbor are over for the rest of the summer.

Founders Nicole Novotny and Andrew Glatt announced on Instagram that they're canceling the lakefront meetup for the rest of the summer.

The group started humbly and on a small scale two years ago but eventually drew hundreds of swimmers at a spot that is not staffed by lifeguards. Participants have used floats, which is prohibited by the Chicago Park District. For safety reasons, officials were wary of the club.

The club tried to cancel last Friday’s meetup, but many swimmers showed up, anyway. So did Chicago police.

"We will not host any additional swims this summer due to last Friday's events and the complex communication that is happening between the Chicago Park District and the city,” Novotny said.

Glatt says the group will sponsor other social activities.

"We love swim club, and we see the value that it brings to so many, us included,” he said. “So, we're planning upcoming events that are free and focus on exactly what got us here in the first place, which is you guys."
