CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The search for a tenant to replace the Macy's in Water Tower Place will take a little longer.

Macy’s — before that, Marshall Field’s — had anchored Water Tower Place since it opened in 1975.

But Macy's closed that Magnificent Mile location earlier this year as part of a planned pullback that pre-dated the COVID-19 pandemic.

Second Ward Ald. Brian Hopkins tells the Chicago Tribune that Target is no longer in talks to open a store in the vertical mall.

Hopkins said negative publicity pushed Target away.  Target's interest in Water Tower Place, generally known as an upscale destinations, led some to question whether that was a good fit.

An analysis of storefronts on North Michigan Avenue found 28 vacant storefronts along the iconic commercial corridor.
