(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A day after a Fenger High School student was struck by a car, family members gathered to demand the driver come forward.
At the corner of 112th and Lowe, Martianna High says her brother, 15-year-old Maari Roberson, was hit by a car while walking home following 3 p.m. dismissal from school on Monday.
“By the time he realized the guy was coming down the street, he was struck down and he was hit pretty hard. They said he was found unresponsive, and the driver got out and acted like he cared,” she said.
That driver, according to relatives, told the Fenger sophomore he would return after picking up cigars, but never returned. The motorist reportedly gave a fake name and phone number.
Roberson suffered serious injuries including broken bones and brain damage.
Early Walker, founder of I’m Telling, Don’t Shoot, is now offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. He urged the driver to turn themselves in.
“Look at what you did. You changed the trajectory of this young man’s life. But you still have a chance to do the right thing. We’re just asking you to give this family justice, give this family the answers they deserve.”
