(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Two 14-year-old boys were fatally shot moments after witnesses reported they were seen trying to steal a car in the Chatham neighborhood on Sunday, Chicago police said.
They were found dead in an alley around 2:30 p.m. in the 800 block of East 89th Place, police said. They were pronounced dead at the scene with gunshot wounds to their heads.
One of the boys was identified as Rashad Dorsey by the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The other boy’s name has not been released.
Before the shooting, a witness called 9-1-1 to report four people trying to stealing a car on that block, according to a police report.
The witness told the Sun-Times that a man came from a building to confront the children, who ran into an alley.
When the boys reappeared from the alley minutes later, the woman said she called 9-1-1 again.
The boys ran into an alley again and, three or four minutes later, she heard gunshots and called police a third time, according to the witness, who asked that her name not be published.
Thirty spent shell casings were found in the alley, according to the police report.
“The police should have gotten there when I called them. Those kids would still be alive,” the woman said.
Police said no one was arrested.
