CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- If a trip to Italy is not in the cards for you any time soon, you still have a chance to see Michelangelo’s artwork from the Sistine Chapel in an up-close, life-sized, never-before-seen perspective.

Most know the Sistine Chapel as the place Catholic cardinals meet to select popes; but visitors to the Vatican can tour the chapel, but are usually ushered in and out within 15 minutes, all the while security guards continually remind visitors not to take photos.

But now, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel Exhibition, a life-size exhibit of nearly three dozen reproduced works, opens Wednesday in the former Sears store in Oakbrook Center.

The reproductions were created using a special photographic technique that reproduces the look and feel of the original fresco paintings. Visitors will be given a chance to engage with the artwork in ways that were never before possible, seeing every detail, every brushstroke, and every color of the artist’s 34 frescoes.

The exhibit focuses on some of the most famous pieces in the collection including The Last Judgment and The Creation of Adam. The organizer said the floor-to-ceiling reproductions look as if they were peeled off of the Sistine Chapel itself and taken on tour.

Visitors are welcome to take pictures, and it is estimated that it takes about 90 minutes to walk through the exhibit.

Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel Exhibition opens Wednesday, and will run Wednesdays through Sundays until August 15. Tickets are already in high demand, and are on sale now on Fever’s marketplace, with prices for adults starting at $20.
