(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After a slow start to winter, Chicago is catching up with average snowfall levels. And snow removal companies are looking for workers.
At the top of one Chicago snow removal company’s website, it says: “Now hiring!”
At another company, Northwest Snow Removal, its president Maggie Downer said they’re trying to hold on to their work force.
“We’re paying our drivers almost twice what we were two years ago, and we’re still having trouble retaining people,” she said Monday.
Not just drivers — also shovelers.
“With COVID, if one shoveler is out, the whole sidewalk crew is out. So, that’s been difficult.”
Downer said it’s been tough to find someone who’s available 24/7 when you can’t even guarantee them work if there’s no snow.
She said she’s hoping the area will get dumped on in February.
