CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- About 450 workers at El Milagro tortilla plants and restaurants are celebrating an agreement between the company and the National Labor Relations Board that recognized their right to organize.
The workers gathered on the sidewalk outside an El Milagro facility and restaurant at 26th and Albany chanting “yes it can be done" in Spanish.
"It is sad to see the company responded to our efforts by looking to discourage us-by looking to silence us," said an organizer.
The agreement includes pay raises, air conditioning and sexual harassment training. State Rep. Celina Villanueva showed support for the workers.
"I'm very proud of their continuous fight-of their courage," she said. "The company spent $1.8 million on legal feels when that $1.8 million could have gone to the workers."
Inside the plant, a worker said a notice was posted saying anyone who leaves work to join those gathered outside would have to go to Human Resources before returning to work.
