OAK BROOK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Alleged burglars involved in a pursuit with police tossed a gun out of the car, and it is now a key piece of evidence following an unusual set of circumstances.
According to Oak Brook police, on Monday, Nov. 15 at approximately 6:38 p.m., through the course of ongoing investigations into more than two dozen forced-entry residential burglaries to single family homes, the North Regional Major Crime Task Force's Burglary Task Force identified a suspicious vehicle, with four men inside, parked outside an Oak Brook home located on Windsor Drive, that would later be found to have been burglarized.
Upon their arrival at the Oak Brook home, the vehicle allegedly fled the area leading authorities on a high-speed chase on eastbound I-290.
During the chase, on the Eisenhower, a woman who was behind the car being pursued told police she saw sparks in the road. And the next morning, on Tuesday, she found a gun lodged in the front end of her car.
The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said the gun had been stolen from the home where the chase started.
The men in the car managed to get away from the officers pursuing them, but am Illinois State Police helicopter followed the car to a location on 74th Street in Burbank and local police were called in.
Two men got away and two were arrested. They’re identified as Peter Miller, 33, of Chicago, and Michael Miller, 25, of Chicago. Both have been charged with one count of residential burglary, a Class 1 felony.
“Residential burglary can have a devastating effect not only on the victim of the crime, but also on the entire community,” said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin, in a statement. “A family’s home is their sanctuary, providing safety and security to all within. Any violation of the protection a home provides will not be tolerated and will be met with the full force and effect of the law. I commend the Oak Brook Police Department for their work on this case and thank the Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, Burbank, Bridgeport and Lyons Police Departments as well as the Illinois State Police for their assistance. It is because of their collaborative efforts we are able to file today’s charges against these defendants. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Amanda Meindl and Grace Barsanti for their efforts on this case as well.”
On Thursday, a judge set bond at $300,000 for Peter Miller and $250,000 for Michael Miller.
The next court appearance for both men is scheduled for Dec. 1.
An investigation into the matter continues. Anyone with information is asked to call the Hinsdale Police Department at (630) 789-7070.
