(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A toy dog has become a social media celebrity in Joliet.

Sue Gulas, president of the Joliet Park Board of Commissioners, said it all started a few weeks ago, when a plush toy in the form of a small dog was found in the Pilcher Park Nature Center parking lot.

The little fellow has a distinctive name tag that says its name is Odie.

Gulas said they had no luck finding the owners, so an employee began posting photographs on social media.

"She started posting these pictures on Facebook of Odie interacting with some of the animals, and going on the trails and looking at a map, and looking out the window, looking for his person. It just took on a life of its own.”

Many people have reacted on Facebook, but Gulas said Odie's owner still has not come forward.

“Everybody's been commenting like they just can't wait to see what's going to happen next. And I think it's just a case of people are looking for some feel-good human interest story rather than politics and crime and inflation and all that other stuff, and I think that's why it's taken off.”

Gulas said all the attention over a fake animal could help out some real ones at the Pilcher Park Nature Center.

Meantime, Odie’s fate is still to be determined, Gulas said.
