CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- There were incidents Friday in which trucks got stuck under the “El” tracks on Lake Street on Chicago’s west side. A constant problem, some say, that needs more attention.

Lewis Merriweather, a Lake Street building manager, sees it all the time.
“I’ve seen hundreds of trucks (get stuck) since I’ve been here," he said.

He told CBS 2 it feels like an earthquake when a truck gets stuck under the El structure.

Roger Romanelli, with the Fulton Market Association and the Westside Infrastructure Coalition, said the problem is what he describes as “a roller coaster.”

There are fluctuations in the clearance that truck drivers don’t see coming.

“This Lake Street is the most dangerous and deadly street in Chicago,” Romanelli told CBS 2.

“We cannot be the best city in the world if trucks from across America are getting trapped like rats – and ripped apart like children’s toys – under this Lake Street structure."

The city has posted some signs at four intersections, but Romanelli said they’re not enough.

The support columns are also an issue, because they’re just off the traffic lanes and can be a challenge for truck drivers.
