(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Two female Chicago police officers found themselves stranded in a hotel in Peru as protests erupted following the ouster of the president and the declaration of a national state of emergency.
John Catanzara, President of the Fraternal Order of Police spoke in a video that he posted on social media about what he sees as a lack of effort on the part of the government to do something about the situation.
"It's pathetic to think that political leaders are literally willing to let things like this just go by wayside and do nothing."
The US Embassy in Peru says Americans “are advised to shelter in place until safe transportation options become available.”
The officers tried to get out of the country on Monday, but were unable to get on a plane.
"It's kind of a terrifying situation-in a strange country stuck. They were due back three days ago," said Catanzara.
