(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Two college students from Chicago's northwest suburbs died in a crash in Carbondale on Monday morning.
The victims were Wolfgang Gustaveson, a 19-year-old from Park Ridge, and 18-year-old Francis Martinez from Des Plaines — both of whom were Southern Illinois University automotive technology students.
Police said they were in a head-on collision at about 7:45 a.m. while traveling northbound on North Illinois Avenue near 2nd Street, less than two miles from the university.
Gustaveson and Martinez were pronounced dead at the scene.
The other vehicle's sole occupant sustained serious injuries.
SIU canceled automotive technology classes for the day and deployed mental health counselors for support.
