Ukrainian Village residents voice concerns over crime, allege lack of police support

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Residents of Ukrainian Village on Chicago’s Northwest Side gathered Tuesday night for a community meeting on crime.

“We’re getting terrorized right now,” said one man at the meeting.

Another resident said she’s never been afraid to live in the area.  She is now.

CBS-2 captured the meeting.

"I never see a police officer, unless it's after a crime is committed," another woman said at the forum. "Never. Never."

That’s been happening more. An uptick in robberies, carjackings and thefts.

Alderman Gilbert Villegas invited residents to the forum.

"The community is scared, and so what I wanted to do is bring this meeting together,” Villegas said.

Some said their district police station, the 13th, closed during the Rahm Emanuel administration, needs to be reopened. They’re passing petitions.

The building is now being used by the Sheriff’s Office. Police assigned to patrol the area are based in the 12th District station miles away.
