CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The University of Chicago is urging the campus community to be on alert following two separate armed robberies that occurred Wednesday near the university.

Campus security said the robberies happened within five minutes of each other, shortly before 3 p.m.

In the first incident, at about 2:50 p.m. two University of Chicago students were crossing the street at 56th and University when they were confronted by four armed suspects, campus officials said. The suspects robbed them of their property, got into a four-door black Infiniti and then fled the scene.

No one was hurt. The University of Chicago Police Department (UCPD) is handling the investigation of this robbery.

Roughly five minutes later, the university said another robbery occurred. A U of C Student was walking off-campus on 56th Street near Dorchester and was accosted by two armed suspects. The pair stole the student’s valuables, left in a four-door black vehicle and drove south on Dorchester.

The victim was not hurt, the university said. Chicago Police is investigating this robbery.

At this point, it’s unclear if the two robberies were connected, however, campus security said UCPD and campus safety ambassadors will continue to have an increased presence in the area.
