(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A sports memorabilia auction house has announced the 2016 Cubs World Series ring that belonged to MVP Ben Zobrist is up for sale this summer.
Zobrist’s World Series ring is being touted on the Twitter page of Heritage Auctions Sports, a Dallas-based auction house.
The hardware will be up for auction in late August, Robert Wilonsky, the communications director for Heritage Auctions, said Friday.
“The ring was consigned to us by a client who says that he bought it personally from Ben Zobrist,” he said.
“The client who is consigning the ring is someone who collects — buys and sells — championship hardware, rings, bracelets and all that kind of stuff.”
Wilonsky said he doesn’t know when the client bought the ring from Zobrist, a central Illinois native who ended his professional career with the Cubs.
Bidding for the August auction begins July 30.
Heritage Auctions will bring the Zobrist ring to Chicago in late July so that people can see it, Wilonsky said.
No, they have not yet set an estimate on the ring.
“Because it is such a unique, one-of-one item, I wouldn’t even think our cataloguers and our consignment directors and our sports directors yet know how to estimate what its value is,” he said.
