MAYWOOD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An Oak Park police detective has died after he was shot in the west suburb Friday morning.
The village of Oak Park said the Detective Allan Reddins was shot around 9:30 a.m., shortly after which time the Oak Park Fire Department responded to a call of shots fired on Lake Street near Scoville Park.
Reddins was shot in his side and was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. Officials said Reddins' death was the department's first line-of-duty death since 1938.
"The Village of Oak Park extends its deepest condolences to Detective Reddins’ family, friends and colleagues within the Oak Park Police Department and the wider law enforcement community as they process the grief caused by this senseless violence," read a statement from Oak Park Chief Communications Officer Dan Yopchick.
The offender was also shot in the leg and was being treated at the same hospital. Officials said he was in stable condition.
Police said the offender was seen leaving a bank on Lake Street with a gun, which is what prompted the initial police response. Officials said the investigation into the shooting was continuing.
Reddins was 40 years old and a Chicago resident. He was sworn into the Oak Park Police Department in May 2019.
