UPDATE: Suspect in Matteson triple-shooting captured following hours-long South Side standoff

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A fugitive accused of shooting three people in a home invasion in south suburban Matteson earlier this month shot himself Friday morning, authorities said, ending a 12-hour standoff on the South Side involving FBI agents and Chicago and Matteson police officers.

The target of a nationwide manhunt, Lander Coleman, 43, survived the wound he inflicted on himself during the SWAT situation in the Roseland neighborhood, according to law enforcement sources and Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford.

This standoff began shortly before midnight in Roseland, near 95th and Perry. Chicago Police said officers were on the scene to assist Matteson Police, with an FBI Chicago official saying agents were helping local police find a suspect wanted in the Chicago area.

According to the FBI, the  suspect “became aware of law enforcement presence,”  took out a gun and ignored commands from police and agents.

This apparent barricade situation lasted for more than nine hours.

The suspect suffered a  “relatively minor” gunshot wound, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Langford, and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where his condition had stabilized.

Earlier this week, Matteson police announced a nationwide manhunt for 43-year-old Lander D. Coleman. He’s accused earlier this month of sneaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and shooting her, her 12-year-old son and 23-year-old daughter.

As of about 11 a.m. Chicago Police allowed traffic back through after road closures were put in place in the 9600 block of South Lafayette Avenue.
